Trail concept development
A trail concept is the framework that guides development. It defines who the trails are for, the types of experiences they’ll offer, and how they’ll fit within the landscape.
Starting with a clear concept avoids costly changes later, helps secure support and funding, and ensures the trails are practical, sustainable, and aligned with community needs.
Feasibility assessment
A feasibility assessment framework provides a structured, repeatable way to evaluate whether a trail project is viable. It includes assessment of environmental, economic, and social factors. It helps land managers and funding partners compare opportunities, reduce risk, and is the best way to test whether proposed trails align with rider or market demand, land use constraints, and strategic goals.
As we are not involved directly in construction we can complete assessment without any conflict of interest.
Trail design
Trail design is the detailed, on-ground alignment that trail construction will follow. Good design will maximise experience and alignment with objectives while minimising impacts, costs and risks.
Detailed trail design provides the information needed to complete assessments and approvals, understand costs, secure funding, and move confidently into procurement and construction.
Location services for film and advertising.
Mountain biking evokes feelings of adventure, achievement, and connection to nature — qualities many brands want to align with.
I’ve worked extensively with MTB, retail, global automotive brands, as well as tourism agencies and destinations, to align their products and experiences with the imagery and energy of mountain biking.
If you have a product who’s value can be aligned with mountain biking or appeals to mountain bikers, I can help with location scouting, trail access, permits, and logistics.
Project management
Mountain bike trails are a specialised form of infrastructure, and many councils and land managers may not have in-house expertise to oversee their development. Bringing in an external project manager creates a clear interface between client and contractor, ensuring the project delivers on its objectives.
Effective project management reduces risk. By anticipating potential issues and guiding sound decision-making, it often offsets its own cost through smoother delivery, fewer delays, and better long-term outcomes.
Trail audits and assessments
Trails need ongoing attention to stay safe, sustainable, and enjoyable. A trail audit or assessment provides a clear picture of a trail or network’s condition, highlights risks, opportunities, and maintenance needs, and shows how well the trails are meeting community or market expectations.
For councils and land managers, an audit or assessment by Trail Alignment supports confident decision-making, helps prioritise maintenance and investment, and forms an essential part of effective risk management.
Training
Developing skills within your organisation makes trail maintenance and management responsive than relying solely on external contractors and is usually more cost-effective.
I work with trail-building companies, land managers, volunteer groups, and schools to develop the skills needed to build, maintain, and manage mountain bike trails safely and effectively. This builds local capacity and ensures your trails achieve their objectives over the long term.
